The Mindset of a Nutrition Superhero

When it comes to nutrition coaching, I am not your average or ‘normal’ coach. 

That’s not to say I won’t share a ton of great nutritional content and free resources, but those resources mean nothing if the women I coach aren’t doing them for the right reasons: to become their own superheroes. Yeah, sounds corny but hear me out. Superheroes are revered the world over and most of us – if we’re being honest – would love nothing more than to BE a superhero. We admire their traits like: courage in the face of danger, perseverance even when the mission is hard, honesty & integrity even when those opinions aren’t popular, compassion & empathy for others and finally a sense of confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Call me weird but I have always had an affinity for superheroes. Specifically female superheroes like Buffy, Faith, Black Widow, Super Woman, Captain Marvel .. and so many more. I admire their strength, their power, their willingness to embrace who they are and to help others – regardless of the personal cost. It’s one of the reasons why I geek out over MCU movies with strong female leads and why I own all the seasons of Buffy and can (and will) discuss all the characters and their rich storylines with passion. It’s also one of the fundamental reasons why I chose to become a coach.

So as a coach, one of the biggest areas we work on is mindset. Because sustainable change is about much more than just learning to meal prep or track your calories. It’s about digging deep and uncovering that strong, couragous kickass hero that lies within you.

I get what it feels like to think you’re a failure if you’ve never managed to sustainably lose weight and the taste of desperation when nothing seems to work. It’s not your fault those diets, ‘magic pills’ and programs don’t work. Diets aren’t longterm solutions and that’s why so many people are struggling with obesity today. They don’t give you the tools or the mindset you need to create sustainable change. 

Diets take our power away and I want to help you start taking that power back. 

I spent much of my life feeling anything but a superhero – in fact I often felt like the opposite. I was that quiet, shy girl who had her nose in a book and who never quite fit in. I know the pain of being bullied – and of bullying myself with uber critical thoughts and put downs. I struggled most of my life with weight issues and I lived that demeaning yo-yo diet lifestyle thinking that the problem was ME. Inside though, I knew I had this amazing badass woman who was strong, confident and capable of amazing things. I just had no idea how to unleash her and to become her.

I would love to say that one day I just ripped open my shirt – total Superman style – and became her. It wasn’t that simple or easy but when I dropped the diet bullshit, the crazy perfectionism and the inner bullying tactics I took the first steps towards letting that inner hero out. I stood up for myself – even when it was hard – and made choices that were in my best interest even when it was outside my box or when I made others upset. And when I began making decisions based upon being her, on what she would do and how she would honor herself … the warrior within me was reflected in the mirror for the first time. 

It’s a journey and it’s a mindset shift. I’m here to tell you that you are fully capable of making that shift too.

You are capable, strong, fierce and beautiful. You are capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for if you choose to look within. To bypass the quick fix for the beauty of sustainable transformation.

At some point, when you’re fed up with feeling like a failure. When you are ready to love and honour yourself then one word is going to flash in your mind: ENOUGH.

Enough with the bullshit. Enough with not believing in yourself. Just. Enough.

Everything comes down to choices and you have to choose to believe in yourself. To have faith in your unique abilities, skills, strength & beauty. And when I think about choices, I think back to Buffy’s kickass speech in Chosen (yup geeking out on you here) because it’s so powerful and so very apt:

“So here’s the part where you make a choice. What if you could have that power, now? In every generation, one Slayer is born, because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman [Willow] is more powerful than all of them combined. So I say we change this rule. I say my power, should be our power. Tomorrow, Willow will use the essense of this scythe to change our destiny. From now on, every girl in the world who might be a Slayer, will be a Slayer. Every girl who could have that power, will have that power. Can stand up, will stand up. Slayers, every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?” – Buffy Summers to the potential Slayers in ‘Chosen’.

I am not going to tell you it will be easy. It won’t be. After a lifetime of excuses and choosing everyone else over yourself – you have to choose to drop all the excuses, all the judgement and the preconceived ideals of what and who you are. To choose YOU and step into your power that has been there all along. It doesn’t happen overnight or in some magical movie moment like when Captain Marvel strips off the device that had been limiting her power but rather as a series of small, significant choices:

  • You choose to start eating healthier meals, not to lose weight but FEEL better and to nourish your body.

  • You choose to start exercising and strengthening your body not to be skinny but to be strong.

  • You choose to start stripping away the things that weren’t serving you in your life from traditions to ideals about who you should be or who you think you are

  • You chose to challenge yourself and start diving into your emotions and issues with perfectionism, body ideals and expectations

  • You choose to look at your life and start making decisions so that you can be happier – even though that means you have to leave the safety of your previous life

  • You chose to show up for YOU, to be patient with the process and to have the courage to face your fears with compassion so you can build confidence in yourself and persevere … even when shit gets hard and real

The thing about deciding to be our own superheroes is that there is no perfect path. Just like everyone is unique, so too are the ways that you choose to embody the characteristics of a hero. I’m not perfect – not even close. But I have learned that the strength, the courage and all the characteristics that I sought for so long – are within me. That I have the power to shape my life and that the woman I am is worthy and strong.

And once you start thinking of yourself AS as superhero then you start making choices that reflect your new identity. You take care of your body, you are proud of your strength and you find the courage to step outside societal norms and do what’s right for you and your self.

So as a nutrition & mindset coach, my role is to help you on your journey. To give you not just the tools but my experience and guidance, so you can start living your life as the superhero you truly are. 

Not to be skinny. Not to fit some societal norm. But to FEEL strong, healthy, happy and beautiful. To nourish who you are as an amazing, gorgeous woman. So you can live your best life and stop dieting your life away.
