Sustainable weightloss. To many who struggle with losing weight and keeping it off, this term may seem like an urban legend or a myth. Why? Because while most of us are definitely capable of going on a diet and losing a few pounds, it’s another thing entirely to lose weight and keep it off.
There are many reasons for this, from inadequate education about nutrition to a complete lack of patience with the weight loss process. Most people if they want to lose weight, opt to go on a super restrictive diet for a short period of time but then ditch it when real life happens or they can’t take eating diet food and fall back into their old eating habits.
The reality is, that sustainable weightloss isn’t achieved through quick fixes or diets but rather through building healthy habits and practicing healthy lifestyle skills. And one of the most essential healthy lifestyle skills for weightloss is meal prepping.
Meal prepping is essentially preparing meals and snacks in advance. It requires planning ahead so that you can make intentional and mindful choices about the food you are going to eat. Meal prepping and planning helps you assert control over any bad eating habits and begin replacing them with new, healthier ones.
Having prepped meals and snacks ready for you is a powerful and positive thing. When we have healthy foods prepped and convenient then we are much more likely to eat them vs unhealthy foods. And when life gets stressful & hectic, one of the best things we can do to maintain our lifestyle is rely on meals that are prepped and ready for us to eat and enjoy.
Most of us know that when we don’t have a plan for what we are going to eat and we are tired & stressed, we often resort to fast food or convenience foods. It’s easy. It’s fast. It’s a no brainer. Unfortunately life is never not hectic or stressful which is why learning a new skill (and habit) like meal prepping is crucial to sustainable weightloss. It makes healthy food easy, fast and convenient.
And while I know that meal prepping can seem overwhelming, it absolutely is not hard to do. There are great meal prep hacks and meal planning tools that you can use to make the whole process super simple. And once you start reaping the benefits of eating healthy on a consistent basis – like losing weight (and keeping it off) and feeling healthier & stronger – you will wonder why you didn’t start meal prepping sooner.
The reality is that the hardest part of the weightloss process is letting go of the desire for quick fixes and magic diets. Once you shift your mindset and start focusing on learning new habits, learning new skills and approaching weightloss less like the Amazing Race and more like a lifestyle … the more successful & happy you will be.
So if your goal is not just losing weight, but keeping it off for good, then mastering essential healthy habits like meal prepping & planning will help you get there.
